Now that there are fewer opportunities to make fun of Donald Trump, comedian Bill Maher — known for his political satire that often targets the right – is increasingly turning his attention to the other side of the aisle, where there is plenty of fodder for late-night jokes.
The complete ignorance that American millennials have when it comes to history was a topic on his HBO show, Real Time With Bill Maher, this week. After talking about how people in countries like India and Japan show respect for older people, he said that advertisers in the U.S. love the 18-to-34 demographic “because it’s the most gullible.” And it’s hard to argue with that notion when you take a look at what has been happening in recent years, particularly when it comes to movements like defunding the police and how quickly young people got on board with this ill-conceived idea.
He cited the statistic that one third of people under the age of 35 say they are in favor of abolishing the police entirely, which he says is “less of a policy position and more of a leg tattoo.”
Then, he moved on to those misguided millennials who somehow think it would be a good idea to try communism – 36 percent of them, to be more precise. Maher pointed out that much of the world did indeed already try communism, and it worked out pretty horribly for them.
Using one of millennials’ favorite reproaches when someone calls them out on their poor logic — that “older” people “don’t get it” – he added: “So when you say, ‘You’re old, you don’t get it’, get what? Abolish the police? …and the Border Patrol? … and Capitalism? … and cancel Lincoln?
“No, I get it… the problem isn’t that I don’t get what you’re saying or that I’m old. The problem is that your ideas are stupid.”
He also took aim at millennials’ smartphone addictions, calling out those who think an 80-year-old is hopeless because they can’t use an iPhone. “Maybe the one who is hopeless is the one who can’t stop using it,” he said.
Maher also recently focused on how Democrats are the most ill-informed party when it comes to facts about COVID-19, making statements such as: “So, almost 70 percent of Democrats are wildly off on this key question, and also have a greatly exaggerated view of the danger of Covid and the mortality rate among children – all of which explains why today the states with the highest share of schools that are still closed are all blue states.”
He took the liberal media to task for spreading fear about outdoor transmission of the virus and wasn’t shy about calling out obesity for its role in raising the risk of COVID-19 complications. He said Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is doing a better job than New York Governor Andrew Cuomo at protecting the elderly, possibly because of DeSantis’s better understanding of scientific literature.
He also took aim at the mainstream media and the lies it spreads, asking: “Shouldn’t the liberal media have to answer for, ‘How did your audience end up believing such a bunch of crap about Covid?’”
In early March, he condemned transgender mutilation of children via drugs and surgery, and he has also gone on the record as saying he does not want politics mixed in with his medical decisions.
Although he is someone who frequently takes aim at conservatives and it’s hard to agree with him most of the time, we have to give some credit where credit is due and applaud Maher for saying some truths that his liberal audience might not want to hear.
